I would add that so much of the online job search need not stop just because the weather outside is frightful and the recipients aren't likely to be in the office. I got plenty done with connecting and networking online, researching companies, updating resumes on the job boards, and applying to posted jobs. We'll see if it pays off!

Late to the conversation, Cynthia, but I have my own potential testimonial as of this morning. After pursuing a mostly networking-based job search for a few weeks, I finally went back on Monster and Career Builder to update long forgotten resumes there. Within 24 hours, I had half a dozen e-mails and two phone calls regarding "Territory Manager/Sales" positions with Aflac -- something in which I am decidedly not interested. But this morning I received a call from a recruiter looking to fill a temporary contractor position in my line of work for the major competitor of the company I most recently worked for, something in which I am decidedly interested.

We'll see how it goes, but I have to say I was surprised. I updated the resumes on those job boards more as a matter of going through the motions following advice at a weekly job search support session.

Speaking of which, you are providing a wonderful service with this blog on so many levels. There is a special place in heaven for you.

You're right. The competition is thick, and it's definitely hit or miss for resumes on job boards like Monster. I suggest you make sure the key words are in your resume that will get recruiters to you in a search. That will increase your odds.

In 1999 I was hired by a company that found my resume on Monster.com. When that job ended, I went online and found another one, also on Monster.com

I think it is much harder for your resume to be found today. There are many more sites, not to mention many more candidates. I have not been contacted by anyone worthwhile after more than one year.

This is great feedback. I would add social networking online and good online research skills to find the events/seminars/conferences/networking opptys you want to be at to market yourself.

I like the one about knocking on doors unannounced, as this has been virtually out of the question for professionals for as far back as I can remember. It tells you how dynamic and agressive the market has become.

Calling companies you like from the Yellow Pages should be a natural step if you've prepared a detailed a list of target companies you feel you would like to work for.

Altogether great real-time advice.

Career fairs are a total waste of time and entirely dis-spiriting. You research the companies and apply online in advance of the career fair date. You write the job number of the position for which you applied online on your resume and give it to the recruiter, along with the name of a person in the department that you have gleaned from the website or LinkedIn. You ask the recruiter to forward your resume to that person. Then you never hear from the recruiter, the presumed hiring manager or anyone at the company.

I've yet to make a solid contact at a career fair from attendees who are recruiers or panicked and despairing candidates.

Right you are - job fairs can be a real waste of time or a terrific way to talk with a number of your targets in one setting. And it is your job to do the research so you know whether any one job fair is worth your time.

While you are at any job fair, take the time to talk to the folks around you as well. You can learn a lot about the market, other employers that interest you, and potentially grow your network.
